Population

The population of the Montreal CMA is 3,326,510 spread over quite vast territory. The distribution is by no means homogeneous and is concentrated heavily in the urban core on the Island of Montreal. The maximum density is reached in the downtown core, where density approaches 44,000 persons per square kilometre. This density continues through most of the City of Montreal and into Westmount, Outremont and Verdun, and across the river to the north shore of Longueil. The density decreases quite rapidly once outside the limits of these arrondissements, allowing for a clear visualization of the boundaries of the Montreal urban core.

The population of the urban core tends to be younger and has a higher proportion of those aged 15-24 than other areas, but has a significantly lower percentage of the population aged 0-14 (children). This age group is more prevalent in the urban and rural fringe as a proportion of the population. Some exceptions exist. A high proportion of children are near the CTs near to St. Leonard in the northern part of the City of Montreal, and Anjou has significantly fewer children. Children are predominantly found in lower density areas.

Male - female distribution is likewise uneven. Females make up the majority of the population in the urban fringe, while men constitute the majority in the rural fringe. The exception is the downtown core of Montreal, where men greatly outnumber women as a percentage of the population. Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue also has a much higher proportion of men to women.
